Pretty geared perjury and ninety not a Demi has been and I kept the former F. Don't vote with a New York Jets gave the city chiefs whose been the past nine years. As one of ESPN's most visible and topped analysts' bid in December except that a number of coming Arizona State head football coach B immediately Benetton forty recruiting class headlined by. A linebacker from California I am of course talking about the legend heard that word they joined the united united ME SBA coach Albert scary bears are yet. I'm doing well my friend and I appreciate you having me on the worldwide leader. And now it's my pleasure thank you for being here and stop let's just start armed EU had a pretty comfortable in high filed job yet and a television studio talking on TV talk radio why did you wanna get back in this. All. I missed that you know I have tremendous passion fruit came in what I do. I was fortunate to coax young army all American game for about 67 years. And I knew being that eventually held Google back to that is needed to be right kid I had opportunities to go back before. On this we just don't write it was right and down. I'm really glad I'm back we have a walk through the day when our coaches who went start practicing and actually on the thirteenth just on our first spring practice begins in. Just walking on grass with the coaches. Going through the dress rehearsal how would go to practice in this you know we're now we're gonna do stretching just all the things individual. Being back on the grass with the willful. It's a wonderful field. I talked enough college coaches to know that. Being a college coach involves much more than just coaching it's much more than just. Having a whistle around his neck and beyond thereafter I had a one coach 71 time. My job about Tim perceived coaching the sport I'm hired to coach in 90% just other stuff. Al what's it been like dealing with the other stuff. Well that's part of it I mean yes pardon the menu bit yeah that you inherit. When your head coach don't Liverpool football. There's always five things to come across your desk you have no idea where it came from you can have them answered. Since the great thing about it I've got a veteran staff of coaches here three over the head coaches in college football to get an excellent football staff. Excellent support team around me so we've seen as unfamiliar. It didn't in in certain areas I make sure that I ask questions before I make decisions. On the former NFL head coach current Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards Jun 929 FM ESP and how much does your. For lack of a better word celebrity helped you with parents with kids you are somebody who has been on television for a long long time I imagine there are children to children. Kids as young adults who you're recruiting right now who have literally grow up watching you on television that's got to be helpful. Well you accusing you say that we give them a lot from these home visits which you make bomb. And when you pull up to the home at the neighbors ignored you're coming horizons as they enjoyed the visit. So if it got about Rangel what really ironic though for me is that. He'll be it in the league for so long I've actually drafted players. Post against certain players and and that's quite that's quite an honor that's humbling. When a former player tocchet. Talking Herm Edwards are still ahead Arizona State head football coach you're an addict united Femi as he's on Twitter. At Herm Edwards because you know what. I talked to people before when I'm mostly with basketball coach events in hate it always interest in this. A basketball coaches know each other as well as anybody does that way with football coaches say will people the media wait we know we like you don't like who's a good guy who's the not good god I have always interest in. Okay coach who would you say you were song to play for repeat could play for you it'll play for somebody else and they'll say. I'd want my kid to play for in on the basketball side Tony Bennett or John Beilein or whom ever and the idea that you would have people who have been around you know you. And trust you with their signs that that must be a big compliment. Well ideas and you know historically. When you think about coaching which is even being in the media. I think. Home for you war comes out. There's no there's nowhere to hide it. I think people realize the same ground television on the same guy I'm purpose and impertinent person. And that helps you. I have a history of of coaching of of being in the league get it was an honor to be the coach and play in Augusta national football it's spent over thirty seasons. With that being led them. I've always said this culture like plain and your resume. Is what you do and I'll live on that and in and really put that applicant city buddies when he's talking about dealing with players in an honor in the game and make insurance cold streak later right. Obviously there's recruiting and academic stuff yeah and booster gatherings it just to deal with set that aside for a moment strictly in terms of football. Because you you don't did the NFL game is is different in the college game you can do things at the collegiate level that you can't do in the NFL that that work and and vice Versa. Well what is the biggest difference you've noticed studying the college game that that perhaps you didn't realize while focusing so much on the NFL game. Well I focused on both because you have to realize this when you do what I it was required to do become an analyst. You have to look at jewelry. You recruiting base of the cup players that went to the National Football League. Guess with the threat racked college that's chloroform to. So old you have to view what college players are doing what is running offenses or defenses. And apply that to how you evaluate him when they become professional football players. We know the quarterbacks in most of these offenses do not take the ball from Monday senator you got to evaluate that say. What can he do it is to go to struggles bomb. A prime example is as Jerry golf right first year comes in. Never played under center struggled some with the rams get a new bit coach obviously he's forged. So that it all bolting going to be evaluation process so you constantly watching college players because that's our future that's the lifeblood of the National Football League. What on that subject in let me ask you about this crop of quarterbacks where it felt Arnold or John Rosen is there were a guy AER baker mayfield is deserve a preference you have when your scouting. As big quarterbacks that are going to be drafted here not too long. Well I think first and reload our quarterbacks in the they have leadership ability and in the old guys seem to have that Big Apple's qualities. Mixing god ash itself how therapeutic process information. Because at that next level though required to do that. On the third inning and it doesn't go one notices that are they accurate test for the accurate with the football you don't we'd say it's a passing league. I disagree its accuracy leak you have to be accurate with the football the win gold are very small. In the National Football League. Not big window you have to anticipate where the ball being thrown how do you do that you gotta read coverage got a process information within two and a half seconds. The ball have to come out if not you'll be on your back. All the existing supply when you start looking at quarterback. Is that the toughest position in all of sports to play quarterback at the NFL level because it seems like. I mean there's a billion people in this world. And we got about eleven guys can play that position well and that it's not even that might be the hardest thing to do in sports in the world. Well very very difficult in India and you make reporting this since you probably have eleven guys that we you would call the leader or are into that into that category you talk about the rest them. Are developing players solvable never believed the two could still win with a it's just around the cat you have to build around them when you have an elite quarterback. You'd feel like he can carry the team. Most quarterbacks cannot. And so this is where the process comes in with your evaluation what type quarterback do we have what system we run. And and what is the cast that we will surround him with so we can be successful. Wrapping up here with Herman Edwards former NFL head coach ESPN analyst now the head coach at Arizona State University which of course is intemperate I tell yeah. You go to high school in Monterey California you go to college and say Diego and now you work in in Tempe like you picks a pretty good but I've been on that campus. I don't know what there's a more beautiful place in America then in Tempe Arizona what's it like to be there and to recruit to that campus. Well that it is you know way to have a lot of positives that you mentioned it I mean obviously the weather has a great fan base home. One of the most of first campuses in the country. And you think about this place is kind of ironic don't you go back and history of I was recruited by Michael Kush coming up high school. And told to go to cal cal first before him that the defendant stated after my junior year. But the one thing I can remember when I was recruited here they played at night. On that thought they had been the greatest homer ever in visiting college football that the devil long decided originally called Sparky not that man a great place to go. You're talking about. Some great players that we're here to you know. And and you Watson got on TV at night it and it boy tested of this really good but you don't. But I wanted to go populated capital of the packing group looked a major myself now to settle this dispute packet eight's. And it would do exactly and I finally figured out what became the pac twelve what that I got to go back towards. I. A great enjoy that format with Arizona state of football coach over. I NFL head coach in ESPN analyst for a long longtime Coach Edwards at the pleasure that here it's cool to have you back in the college game and I wish you all the luck in the world. You recruit appreciate you are right that's our map what's from. Arizona State University you've been in that part of the country and it's a big. Bit it's MP one time and man it you you don't forget it as it's it's it is as good as advertised it is awesome IE enjoyed my time at the universe to Memphis and thankful for my alma mater all the opportunities it helped me create. I will tell yep yep. That. I don't speak. And perhaps I'm just not an have been a lot of campuses do it it's strong you he I don't think young people take into account now. The things that I would take into a kid that I also did not take into account I was young now but that I would a 100% take into account if I were going off to college now yes and that's things like. Whether. And the campus. And the people on the camp and the beautiful people all there's a lot of beautiful people there. And Arizona State yes for the most beautiful people are at Arizona State it appears from what I've seen war. It's unbelievable no you're right we were we ran to be one time on a percent. A ha a a several years ago made a couple for an hour dinner party town we were out in attempting. Am and I was remember we were bounced around we were all young. And it is good old days share armament those days and I remember having this moment where I was like and a there is not an ugly person in Vietnam. Like where did all the people go. So we're like we're Darren Garnett and a like. I never felt more at a place in my eyes of salt and it was it is like everybody it was just beautiful beautiful that they got they have a look at people we are. Actually in it. After couple brief asking us about a pull one of the locals out of my life. Where the only winner of ugly he does not like allow other people here there's nobody and it just becomes I think. It becomes like a competition home at night because it's always warm the people are always doing things that you do win warm weather like pulls in bikinis in. An and yes swimming trunks in sold then it's like we got to stay in shape year round ya and you gotta stay in shape because everybody over here is in shape nonstop and it just leads to this. Woo boy. Oh boy like a I we're going back if I get a leg started all over and man when Abbey's that's a great consideration that I don't mean just I'm not I don't wanna simplified as. Go to Arizona State to the girls are hot. Com but like I go to Miami there. I go to Arizona State. I go to UCLA river and I mean I go somewhere where it's it's warm basically twelve months a year where you can walk outside in shorts and a T shirt basically twelve months a year. And you're fine. And it's awesome because you somebody's it is like she mocks walker of some of these campuses like you go to miss you I. Why anybody would ever go to some of these campuses that I've been to the basketball games. Because in the winter months it is now is a liberal I mean thank you walk out there just. Like when you can walk outside of the campus like at Michigan State Ortiz Syracuse however. And there's just piles of snow on the side of the road for. Three straight most like every time you walk out it's just great and there's ice everywhere and you contrast that with. Miami. Or Arizona State or UCLA now for my for my bats Israel went college outside Chicago so I just remember memories of drop rookie at this time he had to walk at the library that was back when he had to walk library in a and like you get your backpack on and there's snow and it's flat out I would like to do that why did I do this now why would you why would you wanna do that Arizona State that's my advice for everybody if can manage it. Go to school somewhere that has an awesome can't do it it has awesome weather and enjoy yourself. 'cause that's the way to live don't ever be cold again you could never figure out a way to never be cold again that's the way to beat.
