Johnny Manziel, Johnny Teammate? Express win over Birmingham w/Manziel on Sideline

Final/OT: Memphis 31 Birmingham 25/Next Game: Sat. 3/30 at 1 p.m. at the Liberty Bowl

March 25, 2019 - 8:20 am

Johnny Manziel got some snaps, but not the most important ones. It was Brandon Silvers that started and carried the Memphis Express to a 31-25 overtime win over the Birmingham Iron on Sunday night (3/24) at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in front of an announced crowd of 13,758. That's likely not even close to the real attendance as pointed out by several media members on twitter, and mentioned by University of Memphis President M. David Rudd as well.

But it was Johnny Manziel the teammate that made an impression. Sure he looked good in an Express uniform, but with Silver getting almost all of the snaps Sunday night Johnny was "all-in" seemingly as "Johnny Teammate".  After the game Manziel said, “He (Silvers) earned every single thing he got tonight. There’s no animosity in that quarterback room whatsoever. There are three guys in there every single day helping each other out. This is the best room I’ve ever been in. I’m proud of him. That was awesome. Clutch with all the pressure on him, we came back and won the game, and that’s all that matters.”

Luckily for Memphis sports fans we had a chance to also see a gracious Johnny Manziel off the field too. Manziel added, "(Memphis has) been great. I’ve been happy. This place is exactly what I needed in my life. I think it’s a sign that this is exactly where I need to be and things are happening exactly how they should. I’m happy with that. I’m very thankful for the support.”

On the field, it was vintage "mic'ed" up Manziel that was of most interest on social media.

As the Commercial Appeal's Mark Giannotto pointed out, Memphis may have it's new Express motto: "Turn up on your b**** ass."
