A Celebration of Memphis Basketball at FedExForum

Final: #3 Tennessee Volunteers 102 Memphis Tigers 92

December 15, 2018 - 4:48 pm

There were two clear things that emerged from Saturday's Memphis vs. Tennessee rivalry game featured at 11 a.m. from FedExForum. First, it's clear Tennessee is a top 10 team likely poised to make a deep NCAA Tournament run in March. Second, Memphis basketball is indeed back and poised for great things with high level recruits/reinforcements on the way in 2019-20.

The Memphis Tigers played well enough to hang in the game throughout, often gambling to create turnovers and opportunities. Tennessee took advantage by heading to the free throw line and shooting a whopping 84.8% from the charity stripe (39 of 46).  The gambling defense, the speedy pace, the three point shooting, and everything Memphis tried to throw at Tennessee wasn't enough. Final: #3 Tennessee 102 Memphis 92

Clearly the rivalry between Tennessee and Memphis is back on, and Tennessee has an impressive squad. Admiral Schofield led Tennessee with 29 points in 37 minutes and said that his team wanted to make a "statement" on the Memphis home court.

Here's what 92.9 FM ESPN's on-air talent tweeted about the game:

Geoff Calkins on the atmosphere at FedExForum from a sold-out Memphis crowd...

Jason Smith on the effort from an undermanned Memphis squad...

John Martin felt nostalgic...

Gary Parrish was courtside and tweeted that the vibe felt like 2008...

Tennessee will play Samford on Wednesday. (Listen to the game on ESPN 790 AM or on HD Radios on 92.9-HD2)

Memphis' next game will be at FedExForum on  Wednesday night against the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, on ESPN 3 TV.
